Simple Savings: Borrow instead of Buy

Need to ladder to finish a paint job?  Ask your neighbor instead of renting or buying one.  This is one way that we, as neighbors, can support one another and get to know one another better.  I have saved myself a trip to the store, when I was in the middle of making a recipe, by asking our neighbor for an egg.  They were excited to get some bread or cookies in return.  Neighbors can watch pets for each other and water gardens.  We also share a rototiller with a few other families and we all use it each year for our gardens.  It cost less to buy one between us than we would have each paid to rent one in a year.  I love our neighbors and am grateful to have such wonderful people surrounding us to borrow from and to share with.

  1. We've gone beyond bartering just tangible objects: we now barter babysitting. It does save us money, but even more importantly it gives our son the chance to play with other kids every week.
