Conquer Clutter: Having a Clutter Free Bedroom

In talking to friends over the years, I have noticed that many of them will use their bedrooms for things other than what they were designed for.  Do you have a television or a computer in your room?  Your bedroom just isn't the place for that.  I had a friend who would clean up the clutter around the house and put it in a basket and hide it in her bedroom.  She ended up cluttering her room where she hated going in there because it was such a mess.  Kids and toys don't belong in your bedroom either.  The washing that needs to be folded shouldn't find a home in your bedroom.  Having an uncluttered bedroom brings a sense of calm or peace.  If you have exercise equipment in your bedroom, now is the time to remove it.  Clean out your closets and get rid of the clothes that no longer fit or things you don't like or wear any more.  Do you have shoes that you don't wear any more?  Do you have ripped or stained things?  If there are things that don't belong in your bedroom, put them back where they belong in other parts of the house.   I personally like a few more clothes than the minimalist picture above that shows their clothes.  The first picture suits me better.  I do like having a few more things than most minimalists, but I don't like having excess either.

What if you live in a one or two bedroom apartment?

This is a bit more difficult.  You could get a sofa sleeper that also double as a bed.  You could get end tables that have drawers that you could put things in.  You could get an armoire that would hold books, clothes, and a variety of things.  You could even use it as a pantry for food if you wanted.  You could try over the door racks.  It is a bit more of a challenge, but doable.  Go through your things and ask yourself if you really need them.  For example, instead of hanging onto a lot of books, try using a kindle instead.  Instead of all those CD's and DVD's, use a service like Netflix or create a library of your own on Amazon, where you can listen or watch when you want but you don't have the clutter.  Check things out from your local library if you don't want to spend money.

Your bedroom should be a peaceful place that you enjoy spending time in.  Take time to unclutter your bedroom and you will be glad you did.
