Simple Savings: My $753 phone call

Photo from Villa Midea

The amount I saved from careful shopping lists, coupons, bargain hunting, and second-hand purchases over the last year pales in comparison to what I saved myself with one phone call. We had our first child in May, and medical bills have been arriving at our house ever since. The bill for the first round of immunizations came about a month ago, and I was aghast to see the total: over $900. We had paid extra to add well-child care to our insurance policy, but it didn't seem to have benefited us at all. Rather than just accepting the bill without question, I called the insurance company to find out what was going on. I spent ten minutes on hold, and another five minutes talking to a representative. The claim had been improperly processed: without the well-child benefit. The claim was re-filed, and today I received our updated bill. My total savings for fifteen frustrating minutes on the phone was $753. Don't forget to check your bills for mistakes to be sure you're not being overcharged. Your insurance company certainly won't. A few minutes could be well worth it.

  1. good for you! $700 nothing to at,

I listened to a saleswoman from our cable company when she called last week. We have our phone and internet through them. She wanted me to subscribe to cable TV too but I did not. She did lower our monthly bill by $10.40 so I was glad I listened

  2. This is especially important when it comes to medical bills. Today I read that an astounding 50-80% of medical bills have errors in them. We had this same thing happen to us but on an order of magnitude smaller scale. It was still worth getting the error corrected. Simplee.com can help tremendously with detecting these errors. See my post about Simplee.com here.
