Have You Heard of the Compact?

There is a newspaper article here about the Compact, a group of San Francisco people who decided to go 6 months without buying anything new except for food, health and safety items and underwear. The group has increased in numbers and many people are going a year without buying anything new except for the things mentioned above. Look here or here if you are interested in learning more.

As the New Year is coming soon, I thought that maybe some of you might be interested in trying something like this. We have bought a lot of used things in the past, to be more eco-friendly and to save money. I find that for my family, for clothing, we do better to just go to a store and try on things and get one thing that fits well instead of buying lots of things at garage sales that don't end up fitting well or looking good and then having to donate them. I don't like the churning. We don't buy a lot of things, so we are at the point in our lives where we would rather just save the money and get exactly what we want. If I was buying baby clothes, I would go with used unless it was for a gift.

  1. And here I thought that was just called life :)...

Sorry for the snark. It's not intended to offend. I was raised not buying new; and I usually go a full year or more without new underwear, depending on how long ti lasts (tmi?). So it always surprises me when this sort of thing is treated as "new," "revolutionary," or as a "movement."

    Good for them!
