Name Brand vs. Store Brand: Cream of Mushroom Soup

Coming into the Cream of Mushroom taste test, I was certain that Campbell's was far superior to any other brand of condensed soup. Keep reading to see the surprising results!

We tested the big three, Campbell's, Great Value, and Kroger. Here is the price breakdown:

  • Campbell's: $0.50 (on sale! But it is usually around $1.00)
  • Kroger: $0.89
  • Great Value: $1.00
Rather than eat them plain, I mixed each type with a bite of green beans and cooked them. I tried all three, and could barely tell a difference between any of the soups, which surprised me.

One thing I did notice, since I tried 3 of the same soup, was that Great Value was a little too strong, Kroger needed a little more flavor, and Campbell's seemed to be just right, but this difference was very subtle. My husband said they all tasted the same to him.

So, I would declare the winner Campbell's, if you can get it on sale. However, if you can't get it on sale, just go with what is cheapest! In this case, it was Kroger, but you'll have to watch the sales. If you use this frequently, it is a great item to stock up on when it is on sale.

I was very surprised by the results! I thought, for sure, that brand name mattered for Cream of Mushroom. I vaguely remember getting a cream of chicken soup, store brand, and it just tasted terrible, but I need to do the taste test to know for sure!

As for homemade alternatives, I found this recipe online, but have never tried it. I wonder how it compares to the canned? Have you tried making homemade cream of mushroom soup before?

  1. I am not into Campbles myself. Generics all taste way better. Totally grew up on soups but I avoid Campbles at all costs. Something is so off in the past 5 years and it is off in all their soups not just mushroom soup.
