Conquer Clutter: DVD's

I read this post recently about getting rid or DVD's, This is one option, to get rid of everything, but I don't think it is the best option. I will give you my reasons why:

1. If you already have a movie that you really like and plan on watching again, I would keep it. The Star Wars movies and Jane Austen movies will stay in our house because we enjoy watching them. Why should I go spend the money to download them or rent them when I already have them? Maybe I will feel differently as time goes on, but keeping a dozen movies is fine in my book. In fact, I think that up to 25 movies in the house is fine with me. But, I would only choose the ones I really, really like.

2. I do think it is a good idea to just pay the rental fee when new movies come out. You don't know for sure whether you will really like it or not, and why pay 15 - 25 dollars for something you will watch once or twice and then have it take up space and collect dust? After you watch it, if you feel like it is one you cannot live without, then buy it. I think the $1.20 you spent to rent is still well worth it since it helps you to eliminate movies that aren't ones you really truly enjoy. In the long run, you will save a lot of money by renting first. You may compare buying a movie to seeing it in a movie theater, and if you look at it that way then buying is cheaper. But, renting costs much less than buying it. You can even reserve movie. YOU DON'T NEED TO OWN EVERY MOVIE THAT COMES OUT EVEN IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT!

What are your thoughts? Do you think it is good to get rid of everything and then rent? How many movies do you think is a good amount to own?

  1. My main thing with dvds is that the packaging really takes up a lot of room. Once we decide we really like a movie and want to keep the dvd, we ditch the packaging and put it in a disc binder we bought at Walmart. It's saved us SO much space!

However, we only ditch the packaging if we are ABSOLUTELY sure we are keeping the disc. I sell books and discs we don't want anymore on Amazon. Selling a disc without the original box really kills the resale value.
